Author(s): Sudha Suman and Jhanara

Abstract: This study was conducted in 2023-24 in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand, aimed to assess the level of women's empowerment resulting from microfinance and identify the factors influencing it. The research was carried out in the Chandrapura and Bermo blocks, with six villages selected from each block. From each village, ten respondents were chosen, leading to a sample size of 120 respondents. Individual interviews were conducted using a well-structured interview schedule. The data collected were coded, tabulated, and analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The findings revealed that women experienced a medium level of empowerment across economic, social, personal, and family domains due to microfinance. Overall, more than half (55.83%) of respondents belonged to medium category of empowerment of index range (33.34 to 66.66). Several factors, including marital status, education, occupation, landholding size, annual income, social participation, economic motivation, risk orientation, extension contacts, and mass media exposure, were found to significantly impact the empowerment of rural women. Conversely, variables such as age, family type, and type of house had no significant effect on women's empowerment. To further enhance women's empowerment, microfinance institutions should offer flexible loan terms and repayment schedules. Additionally, providing supplementary support such as financial literacy training, healthcare services, vocational training, and the adoption of digital lending platforms can be beneficial. These measures can contribute to a more substantial and sustainable empowerment of women in rural areas.
