Evaluation of plant growth-promoting factor of Acetobacter isolated from sugarcane

Author(s): Lateef Abdulkadhim Malik

Abstract: Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) play a pivotal role in enhancing agricultural productivity by promoting plant health and growth. Among these, Acetobacter species, endophytic bacteria commonly associated with sugarcane, have gained significant attention for their potential to boost crop yield. These bacteria are known to influence plant growth through mechanisms such as nitrogen fixation, phytohormone production, and phosphate solubilization. This study investigates the plant growth-promoting factors of Acetobacter isolates obtained from sugarcane, analyzing their biochemical and molecular characteristics. Sugarcane samples were collected from agricultural sites, and Acetobacter isolates were identified through molecular techniques. Biochemical assays revealed that the isolates exhibit significant nitrogenase activity and produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) at varying concentrations, with the highest recorded at 35 µg/mL. Phosphate solubilization was observed in two-thirds of the isolates. In vivo bioassays with sugarcane seedlings demonstrated a 20-35% increase in root and shoot lengths compared to controls, confirming the plant growth-promoting potential of these isolates. The findings underline the multifaceted role of Acetobacter in sustainable agriculture, emphasizing their potential to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and improve crop productivity. This study provides a basis for further exploration of Acetobacter as a biofertilizer, paving the way for eco-friendly agricultural practices.
