Nutrigenomics in poultry: An integrative review

Author(s): Simi Girija, Vineetha PG, Twinkle Singh and Vivek Srivastava

Abstract: Nutrigenomics is an emerging field which forms an interphase between health, diet and genomics to analyse patterns of gene expression, protein expression and metabolite production elicited by nutrients. It studies how dietary nutrients can interact with genes affecting transcription factors, RNA and protein expression, cellular homeostasis and metabolite production (genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome). It investigates the typical response of cells to a certain nutrient and how that affects homeostasis. In order to prevent certain types of feed in poultry, it would be helpful to appreciate the mechanisms by which some feed ingredients interact with specific genes that can predispose to metabolic diseases. Additionally, understanding the precise type and quantity of nutrients that the body needs will have a positive effect on health management. Future molecular nutritionists can benefit from the use of multivariate experimental designs, shared data, and inventive genetic models to harness genomics for better health and quality of chicken production through more nutrient-dense feed.Nutrigenomics can furnish novel insights to identify candidate genes involved in stress in poultry and to devise subsequent methodologies to alleviate the negative impacts of varied stressors. If the results of nutrigenomic studies are harmonized with standard poultry feeding practices, profitable poultry production encompassing welfare of the birds can be accomplished to meet the escalating demand for good quality animal protein.
