Author(s): Sreejith B and Maneesh B

Abstract: Growing populations and rapid urbanization have intensified the challenges related to social equity, ecological balance, and global food availability. Urban Agriculture has surfaced as a potential solution to tackle these interrelated issues and help achieve the SDGs. This paper looks at all current research regarding how farming in cities aligns with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 1 - Eradicating Poverty, SDG 2- Ending hunger, SDG 3- Promoting health and Well-being, SDG 5- Empowering Women and Girls, SDG 8- Inclusive Economic Growth and Employment, SDG 11- Inclusive and Resilient Urban Development, SDG 12- Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Pattern, SDG 13- Combatting Climate Change, SDG 15- Preserving Land Ecosystems, and SDG 17- Global Collaboration for Sustainability. Urban Agriculture involves food production within and around cities, offering several benefits. It enhances food assurance by supplying locally grown, healthy produce, alleviating hunger, and reducing malnutrition. It promotes physical activity, boosts public health, and strengthens community resilience against price fluctuations. Environmentally, practices like urban forestry, rooftop gardens, and vertical farming help optimize resource use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase biodiversity. By minimizing food miles and reliance on fossil fuels, urban agriculture contributes to climate change mitigation. Furthermore, Urban agriculture fosters social inclusion by offering opportunities for education, skill development, and community engagement, particularly for underserved communities, including women and youth.
