Biotechnology integration and smart waste sorting for sustainable food waste management and sewage load reduction: A case model from Basra
Author(s): Atheer Alhamada
Abstract: This research investigates the integration of biotechnology with smart waste sorting systems to enhance food waste management and reduce organic load on sewage networks in Basra, Iraq. By simulating data from the districts of Hayy Al-Hussein and Shatt Al-Arab, the study explores the technical feasibility, environmental benefits, and economic impact of combining anaerobic digestion units with sensor-based sorting bins. The model indicates a 63% diversion rate of food waste, significant biogas and compost output, a reduction in BOD levels by over 35%, and a payback period under 1 year. These results demonstrate the potential for circular resource use, environmental sustainability, and public health improvement in similar urban contexts. The study also outlines future prospects for extending the system to non-organic waste recycling.
